Know What's Eating Your Power Bill

Ever wondered why your electricity bill is so high? This calculator lets you add each appliance in your home — with its wattage and daily usage hours — and shows exactly how much each one costs you per month. The biggest energy hogs become immediately obvious.

How to Use It

Enter your electricity rate (check your utility bill for the cost per kWh), then add appliances. You can type them manually or use the quick-add presets for common devices like fans, ACs, refrigerators, and more. The calculator shows daily, monthly, and yearly costs with a per-appliance breakdown.

Finding Your Electricity Rate

Look at your last electricity bill for the "rate per kWh" or "unit rate." This varies by country, region, and sometimes by usage tier. Typical ranges:

  • United States: $0.10 – $0.25/kWh (varies by state)
  • Europe: €0.20 – €0.40/kWh
  • United Kingdom: £0.25 – £0.35/kWh
  • India: ₹3 – ₹10/kWh (slab-based)
  • Australia: A$0.25 – A$0.40/kWh

Energy Saving Quick Wins

  • Switch to LED bulbs — they use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
  • Set AC to 24–25°C (75–77°F) — each degree lower increases energy use by 3–5%.
  • Unplug standby devices — phantom loads cost the average home 5–10% of its bill.
  • Use a smart power strip — automatically cuts power to devices in standby mode.
  • Run full loads — washing machines and dishwashers use the same energy regardless of load size.
