Every paycheck goes through several rounds of deductions before it hits your bank account. Federal income tax is calculated using marginal tax brackets — the 2024 rates range from 10% to 37%. Then there's Social Security (6.2% on earnings up to $168,600), Medicare (1.45% on all earnings), and state income tax which varies widely. Nine states — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming — charge no state income tax at all. Your filing status determines your standard deduction and which tax bracket thresholds apply. Single filers get a $14,600 standard deduction for 2024, while Married Filing Jointly gets $29,200. Head of Household falls in between at $21,900. Choosing the right filing status — and claiming the correct number of allowances on your W-4 — directly impacts how much tax is withheld from each paycheck. If too much is withheld, you'll get a refund at tax time. Too little, and you'll owe. The goal is to get as close to even as possible.
