Data Sizes Can Be Confusing — Let's Fix That
Is it kilobits or kilobytes? Is 1 GB actually 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB? If you've ever been confused by data units, you're not alone. This converter handles it all — bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, plus bits, kilobits, and megabits.
Quick Reference
- 1 KB = 1,024 Bytes (enough for a short text file)
- 1 MB = 1,024 KB (roughly one high-res photo)
- 1 GB = 1,024 MB (about 250 songs in MP3)
- 1 TB = 1,024 GB (that's a LOT of movies)
Bits vs Bytes — The Eternal Confusion
Internet providers love advertising speeds in megabits per second (Mbps) because the numbers look bigger. Your actual download speed in megabytes per second (MB/s) is roughly 1/8 of that. So a "100 Mbps" plan actually downloads files at about 12.5 MB/s. Classic marketing move.
Why 1 TB ≠ 1,000 GB on Your Computer
Hard drive companies use decimal math (1 TB = 1 trillion bytes). Your computer uses binary math (1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes). That's why your brand new "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GB. You didn't get scammed — it's just different counting systems.
