The solar system consists of the Sun and everything that orbits around it, including eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The four inner planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars — are rocky and relatively small. The four outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — are much larger and composed mainly of gases and liquids. Jupiter, the largest planet, could fit more than 1,300 Earths inside it. Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, a region populated by millions of rocky fragments left over from the solar system's formation about 4.6 billion years ago. Beyond Neptune, the Kuiper Belt extends outward, home to Pluto and thousands of icy bodies. The Sun itself contains 99.86% of the solar system's total mass and generates energy through nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium at its core. Light from the Sun takes about eight minutes to reach Earth, traveling at roughly 300,000 kilometers per second. The study of our solar system helps scientists understand how planetary systems form and evolve throughout the universe.

Tips to Read Faster

  • 1. Minimize sub-vocalization — try not to "say" every word in your head.
  • 2. Use a pointer — guide your eyes with a finger or cursor to maintain pace.
  • 3. Expand peripheral vision — practice taking in groups of words instead of reading one at a time.
  • 4. Reduce re-reading — resist the urge to go back; trust your comprehension.
  • 5. Practice regularly — like any skill, reading speed improves with consistent practice.

How the Reading Speed Test Works

Select a passage from three available topics, then click Start Reading. The passage unblurs and a timer begins counting. Read at your natural pace — don't rush or skim — and click Done Reading when you finish the last word. The calculator divides the passage word count by your elapsed time to produce your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). You can switch passages and re-test to get an average across different topics for a more reliable measurement.

Understanding Reading Speed Categories

Reading speeds vary significantly among individuals. Below-average readers typically process fewer than 200 words per minute. Average adult readers fall in the 200–300 WPM range when reading for comprehension. Above-average readers operate at 300–450 WPM, while fast readers and trained speed readers can exceed 450–700 WPM. These categories provide context for your test result, but remember that comprehension is equally important — the fastest speed at which you can fully understand and retain the material is your optimal reading rate.

Estimating Reading Time for Books and Articles

The estimate mode lets you enter any word count and your WPM to calculate total reading time. This is useful for planning study sessions, estimating how long a textbook chapter will take, or gauging a novel's reading time before starting. The quick reference section provides one-click estimates for common text lengths: blog posts (~1,500 words), short stories (~5,000 words), novellas (~30,000 words), novels (~80,000 words), textbook chapters (~10,000 words), and research papers (~8,000 words).

Practical Tips to Improve Your Reading Speed

  • Minimize sub-vocalization — silently pronouncing every word in your head is the single biggest limiter of reading speed. Practice processing words visually without the inner voice.
  • Use a visual guide — moving your finger under the text or using a cursor provides a pace reference that naturally increases speed and reduces regression (re-reading).
  • Read in word groups — instead of fixating on individual words, train yourself to absorb clusters of 3–5 words at a glance using peripheral vision.
  • Practice daily — even 15 minutes of deliberate speed reading practice per day can improve your WPM by 50–100 over a few weeks.
