The Eisenhower Matrix Explained
The Eisenhower Matrix is a decision-making framework that helps you prioritize tasks based on two dimensions: urgency (does it need attention now?) and importance (does it contribute to long-term goals?). By categorizing every task into one of four quadrants, you gain clarity on what to work on first, what to plan for later, what to hand off, and what to stop doing entirely.
The Four Quadrants
- Do First (Urgent + Important) — Crisis situations, deadlines, and critical problems. Handle these immediately.
- Schedule (Not Urgent + Important) — Strategic planning, skill development, and relationship building. Block time for these proactively.
- Delegate (Urgent + Not Important) — Interruptions, some emails, and routine requests. Hand these off or batch-process them.
- Eliminate (Not Urgent + Not Important) — Time wasters, excessive social media, and busy work. Reduce or remove these from your day.
How to Use This Tool
Click + Add Task in any quadrant to create a task. Type a description and press Enter or click Add. Hover over a task to see move buttons for quickly re-categorizing it. The stats bar shows how many tasks are in each quadrant. Use Clear All Tasks to start fresh.
Why the Eisenhower Matrix Works
Most people spend too much time in Quadrants 1 (reactive firefighting) and 3 (dealing with other people's urgencies). The most productive people deliberately invest more time in Quadrant 2 — important but not urgent work — because that's where strategic progress happens. This matrix helps you recognize and correct that imbalance.
