How Password Strength Is Measured

This tool evaluates your password across multiple dimensions: length, character diversity (uppercase, lowercase, digits, symbols), common password detection, sequential patterns, and repeated characters. The result is a comprehensive strength rating from Very Weak to Very Strong.

Understanding Entropy

Entropy measures password randomness in bits. Each bit doubles the number of possible combinations. A 40-bit password has roughly 1 trillion possibilities, while an 80-bit password has over a quintillion — making brute-force attacks impractical.

Estimated Crack Time

Crack time is calculated assuming a powerful attacker with a GPU cluster performing 10 billion password guesses per second. This represents a realistic worst-case scenario. Passwords with 60+ bits of entropy typically require years to crack even at this speed.

Tips for Stronger Passwords

  • Use 16+ characters — length is the most important factor in password security
  • Mix all character types — uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols
  • Avoid common words — dictionary words and names are easily cracked
  • Use a password manager — generate and store unique passwords for every account
  • Enable 2FA — two-factor authentication adds a critical second layer of defense
