Why XML Sitemaps Matter for SEO

An XML sitemap is one of the foundational elements of technical SEO. It serves as a roadmap for search engine crawlers, listing every important URL on your website along with metadata like when each page was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is relative to other pages. When you submit a sitemap to Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, you're directly telling search engines which pages to crawl and index.

How to Use This Sitemap Generator

Enter your website URLs one per line in the text area above. Configure the default priority (0.0–1.0), change frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.), and optionally set a last modified date. The tool generates valid XML conforming to the sitemaps.org protocol. Copy the output or download it as a sitemap.xml file ready to upload to your server's root directory.

Best Practices for Sitemaps

  • Include only canonical URLs: Don't list duplicate pages, paginated URLs, or filtered views. Each URL should be the canonical version.
  • Keep it updated: Regenerate your sitemap whenever you add, remove, or significantly update pages.
  • Submit to search engines: Upload your sitemap.xml to your root directory and submit it via Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Reference in robots.txt: Add Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt file.
  • Use sitemap index for large sites: If you have over 50,000 URLs, split them across multiple sitemaps and use a sitemap index file.
